Why Being Fit Makes a Healthier Company
Being healthy and fit is a company-wide priority at ShoreTel, since having healthy and happy employees often means a healthier and more successful business. This idea of health isn’t just a company-wide priority, but a personal priority for ShoreTel CEO Don Joos. Don encourages a fit and healthy life-style which fully encompasses the mind, body and spirit.
When Don isn’t traveling, he wakes up at 4:30 AM to do an Asylum 2 routine workout followed by 20 – 30 minutes of weights and jumping with a weighted rope. When he travels he gets up at 5:00 AM to run 4 – 5 miles and then lifts weights. When asked why he finds it important to be active everyday he responded, “Being fit, mind and body, is essential for my role and it provides me the stamina to do my job. Also, the workout routine is one of the few predictable aspects of my daily schedule so it’s great to start to the day with something predictable I can depend on.”
Don’s influence on the benefits of regular exercise extend beyond ShoreTel. In a blog written by Patty Azzarello, founder of the consulting firm Azzarello Group, she detailed how she was inspired by Don to exercise every day for 100 days.
Patty said she felt challenged by Don to begin working out every day when he told her the decision to work out or not “is not optional.” She is just one person who has felt inspired by Don to make a change.
“I realized that it actually takes less discipline to do something that is not optional, than to do something that you 'should' do,” Azzarello wrote.
As a CEO, Don is always traveling, but he has made it a point to make working out a part of his daily routine no matter where he is in the world. Like many people, he has faced times in his life that make it less of a priority. One of those being having children which inevitably slows this down. Also like many people, he has his vices. One of them being Peanut M&M’s, which he also added are still healthy because of the peanut.
Don understands that he found something that works for him, and he wants to encourage the employees at ShoreTel to find what works for them. Sharing his routine is not just about physical fitness, but overall health, which includes the mind, body and spirit. He explains that his hope is for “the company to create a foundation so that individuals or groups of people can find their routine that works for them.”
At ShoreTel we’ve taken Don’s lead with numerous initiatives including hosting/attending Health Fairs, conducting walking team meetings, selling ShoreTel workout apparel and even a Global Corporate Challenge that encouraged teams of seven to log steps, bike miles and swim distances.
So what does being fit and healthy mean for you? While you may not wake up at 4:30 every morning to work out, it’s important for your health to get moving every day.
